Nikon replaces high-end Coolpix ‘P’ series with P510 and P310

Nikon has updated its photographer-friendly P series with the Coolpix P510 and P310. The P510 gains GPS and an extended zoom, now reaching from 24-1000mm equivalent. This 42x range is likely to be quite a challenge for its VR image stabilization system, so we’ll be interested to see how it performs. The P310 is a more subtle upgrade of the P300. Like the P510 it gains a 920k dot LCD and moves to using a 16MP back-lit CMOS sensor, with all the high-speed, multi-shot image processing modes it enables. More than any of the technology changes, we’re most interested to see the addition of a ‘Fn’ button on the front – if this can be set to control useful functions, it may improve the handling of an already pleasant-to-use camera. . . . → Read More: Nikon replaces high-end Coolpix ‘P’ series with P510 and P310

Unified Color launches HDR Expose 2 and 32Float v2

Unified Color has announced second-generation versions of its HDR Expose software and its 32Float HDR plugin for Photoshop. The latest versions add color dodge and burn tools, and tone curve adjustment, all the while using the company’s 32-bit colorspace that separates color and luminance information to avoid color shifts when changing brightness. The latest version also includes presets, which can be created and modified, to speed up the blending process. Version 2 also gains the ability to batch merge images, using one of these presets. A free 30 day trial of both the 32 Float v2 plugin and standalone HDR Expose 2 software is available. . . . → Read More: Unified Color launches HDR Expose 2 and 32Float v2

Fujifilm HS20 EXR review

Fujifilm’s FinePix HS20 EXR is a 16 Megapixel super-zoom camera with a 30x optical range and 3in articulated screen. These specifications sound comparable to many of its super-zoom rivals, but the HS20 EXR boasts a number of features which make it unique. First, the lens employs a mechanical zoom ring, like a DSLR lens. Secondly it takes AA batteries. Third and arguably most important, the sensor can reconfigure itself to become optimised for resolution, lower noise or higher dynamic range. Throw in 1080p video and RAW capabilities and you have a powerful feature-set which will delight enthusiasts. Find out how it compares – and crucially if the clever sensor really works – in our Fujifilm HS20 EXR review. . . . → Read More: Fujifilm HS20 EXR review

Canon announces PowerShot S100 12MP CMOS enthusiast compact

Canon has announced the PowerShot S100 – the latest in its line of small enthusiast compacts. The S100 features a broader, 5x lens range (24-120mm equiv.), the company’s latest image stabilization and built-in GPS. The interesting specification, from our perspective, is the 12MP CMOS sensor. It’s the company’s second compact camera sensor, following the slightly disappointing example in 2008′s PowerShot SX1. As with the S95, the sensor remains of the larger 1/1.7″ type used in high-end compacts. . . . → Read More: Canon announces PowerShot S100 12MP CMOS enthusiast compact
