The new Olympus XZ-1 is a serious compact that’s aimed at the enthusiast and professional user looking for a small yet capable pocket camera. A relatively large 1/1.63 inch CCD sensor, f/1.8 maximum aperture, 3 inch OLED screen and a full range of manual shooting modes should be enough to get their attention. But can the XZ1 take on the likes of the Panasonic LX5, Samsung EX-1 and Canon PowerShot S95? And here it comes the next DxOmark test that will put the world up side down. Confess, you didn’t expect that the Panasonic LX5 RAW quality to perform so much better than the Olympus XZ-1 (which uses the same sensor!). Click here to see the XZ-1 vs LX5 comparison at DxOmark . I am surprised and you? DxOmark also tested the new Olympus E-PL2. In that case results are on par with the GF2 and the older E-PL1 ( Click here to see the DxO results ). The only real change is that the E-PL2 has a sensible better ISO performance. Bad news folks! There will be no new m43 camera or lens from Olympus for the CP+ show which starts on February 9th in Yokohama. Like Panasonic, Olympus choose to introduce the next wave of new m43 products time after the CP+ show! The only new camera that will be announced is the TG-810 (with small sensor, not a m43 sensor!). The new TG-810 tough camera will be the successor of the current TG-620 compact camer a and have GPS, CMOS sensor, 26x zoom and 24mm wideangle. We found a reference of that camera inside the Henry store (via google cache ). Talking with my trusted sources it looks like Panasonic and Olympus are waiting to see what’s coming next from Pentax and Nikon (in March/April). Meanwhile notice that the E-P2 price is slowly dropping closer to the E-PL2 price suggesting that the E-P2 will be the next camera to be replaced! Amazon (Click here) and Adorama (Click here) are selling the E-P2 for less than $650. And the new E-PL2 sells for $600 at Amazon US , Adorama and BHphoto . . . . → Read More: (FT5) No new m43 camera or lens at the CP+ show! (+TG-810 leak)

We have found so many new reviews today! Now it’s time for the Olympus XZ-1 which is not a m43 camera but definitely something we are interested to hear about! 1) ePhotozine tested the XZ-1: “ The lens is an excellent performer that breaks new ground for a compact camera and offers unique benefits of its own. Although not perfect in terms of its handling the results are worth it and the XZ-1 is Highly Recommended .” 2) Photographyblog posted a set of image samples. 3) There is one more review at iantan.org The author makes an interesting statement and I would love to hear from you what you think about: “ Now you can see why that I think the XZ-1 might actually cannibalize the Pen camera range, especially at the EPL-2 range (sub S$1,000). It shares similar color rendition, similarly restrictive manual exposure controls (you need to upgrade to the Pen EP2 for better manual use), and most potential buyers will be happier with the XZ-1′s solid zoom range and “fast” apertures. ” Note: Adorama (Click here) now added the white XZ-1 preorder option. Letsgodigital tested the new Olympus E-5 flagship camera: “ When we only look at the specifications, it seems as if the Olympus E-5 has been surpassed on all sides by most camera manufacturers. However, practice leads to a completely different conclusion. “..:” the Olympus E-5 has improved or renewed its finest details. It is very solid, very complete and very versatile. “. The final verdict is EXCELLENT ! I repeat it again. It’s amazing to see how a 12 Megapixel sensor can be optimized to deliver a top image quality (at leats at Low ISO!). DCresource tested the new Panasonic GF2: “ It offers very good photo quality, snappy performance, a touchscreen LCD with a customizable interface, the best Auto mode on the planet, and Full HD video recording. The bad news is that it has issues with redeye, underexposure, and highlight clipping, and one of the available kit lenses isn’t great, either. ” GF2 shop links: Amazon US , Adorama , BHphoto , Amazon UK , Amazon DE and eBay . Focus Numerique tested the Olympus XZ-1 and the results are astonishing! The lens is super sharp even wide open (at f/1.8)!!! Distortion is minimal. The only moderate issue is Vignetting. Image quality is good from ISO 100 to 400. Dynamic range is a little bit less than the Panasonic LX5 . Message to Olympus: Great acamera, but please we want more good lenses for our Micro Four Thirds system! Thanks Olympus XZ-1 direct shop links: Amazon US , Adorama , BHphoto , Amazon DE , Amazon UK , Amazon FR . . . → Read More: Panasonic GF2 review at DCresource (+Olympus XZ-1 test at Focus Numerique -> f/1.8 lens super sharp!)

The XZ-1 enters a competitive segment of the market but its specifications suggest it can hold its own.
