Consumer Confidence in Technology Reaches Second Highest Level Ever

Consumer confidence is a somewhat abstract concept, but it’s essentially just what it sounds like. If consumers are confident, it means they’re willing to spend more instead of squireling their money away in case of disaster. If they’re not, they don’t spend. The technology industry, which includes the digital camera market, got some great news in the most recent consumer confidence report. Levels are at 93.6, which is the second highest they’ve ever been. That means more cameras are being sold, companies have more money to work with and that we’ll hopefully see some interesting things come down the line because of it. “Technology continues to be the leading category for shoppers during the holiday season and this year was no exception,” says Consumer Electronic Agency chief economist Shawn DuBravac. “Looking ahead to 2012, consumer tech remains well positioned compared to all other durable goods categories.” . . . → Read More: Consumer Confidence in Technology Reaches Second Highest Level Ever

Ricoh unveils GR Digital IV 10MP enthusiast compact with ‘Hybrid AF’

Ricoh has unveiled the Ricoh GR Digital IV – the latest in its series of high-end, fixed focal-length compacts. The GRD IV is still built around a 10MP 1/1.7″ CCD sensor but gains sensor-shift image stabilization. It also adds ‘Hybrid AF’ that uses twin CMOS AF sensors allowing the camera to assess focus distance and bring focus times down to 0.2 sec (twice the speed of the GRD III). This, combined with the camera’s distinctly photographer-focused interface and compact size, prompts the company to tout the GR Digital IV as a street-shooting tool. The camera also gains a high-resolution RGBW 1.23M dot LCD. There will also be a limited-edition white version for the first time. . . . → Read More: Ricoh unveils GR Digital IV 10MP enthusiast compact with ‘Hybrid AF’

Nikon D5100 Preview

Get ready for the newest member to the Nikon DSLR family of entry-level cameras–the Nikon D5100. The D5100 model number indicates that this new Nikon DSLR succeeds the earlier D5000, which Nikon has already discontinued in late 2010. The most obvious common feature between the two is the articulated LCD screen, which so far is available on no other Nikon DSLRs besides these two. Otherwise, a lot of the D5100’s features are shared either with the D7000 above or the D3100 below; it is definitely a step up from the D5000. Hands-on Experience The Nikon D5100 is small, compact, and reminded me a lot of the D40/D40x. What struck me immediately during my brief hands-on time with the camera, was the very different layout of the buttons and controls (due to the vari-angle LCD’s hinge strategically placed on the back left side). It was strange to navigate at first, being that all the buttons I would normally look for on the left side of the LCD, are now on the right. The control wheel selector is also to the right of the top of the camera rather than the left. In time, I’m sure it would be second nature to navigate, although switching bodies may pose a slight initial challenge to some photographers. The D5100 body is well constructed—it felt solid and good in my hands. I got a run-through of the new Effects mode (easily accessible via the control dial). There are four built-in special effects modes, which apply both to stills and to video (very cool). I look forward to shooting a short with the selective color effect mode (much more time consuming to do a selective color treatment in post production—why not do it in camera?) This is a feature I hope Nikon will include in their future pro models. All-in-all, the D5100 seems like a pretty sharp camera with some new features and updates that will be well worth reviewing. New Olympus E-PL2, Fuji X100 and Voigtländer 25mm reviews

The Olympus E-PL2 has been tested by Electronista (Click here) : “ We suspect the intended audience will be very happy with the E-PL2. Apart from its jewel-like construction and finish, it’s an amazing piece of hardware for the price and size. The image quality is good for the class, and we saw some important steps forward in the control and visual output. Penpal is something of a novelty, especially at its $60 price, but it could be handy if you’re more interested in uploading to Facebook than an edit in Aperture or Lightroom ” Check the current E-PL2 price by clicking those direct links: Amazon , Adorama , B&H , J&R , eBay . The Fuji X100 has been reviewed by Trustedreviews (Click here) : “ The Fujifilm X100 certainly isn’t for everyone with its fixed lens, sizeable body and even more sizeable price tag. However, its rock-solid build quality, superb image quality – with exceptional low light performance – and more compact stance than an equivalent DSLR means it will have pride of place for many enthusiasts and pros as a back up to their main kit. However, if in the unlikely event that you’re considering this camera without already owning a DSLR, then we’d have to concede that any one of many low- to mid-range DSLRs, such as the Nikon D3100 or Canon EOS 550D, would be a more sensible bet. ” Check the current X100 availability at Amazon , Adorama , B&H , J&R , eBay .
