Just Posted: Although it retains its predecessor’s styling, the Olympus PEN E-P3 shares very little else with its forebears. There’s still a 12MP Four Thirds-sized sensor at its heart, but its autofocus, rear screen and movie capabilities have all been radically overhauled. Crucially, Olympus has also managed to squeeze a flash into the body. Now sitting at the top of a three-model range, the E-P3 is clearly positioned as a camera for enthusiasts. So, do its third-generation refinements and promises of world-beating AF performance make the E-P3 into the camera that the PEN series always promised to be? . . . → Read More: Just posted: Our in-depth review of the Olympus E-P3 Windows Phone UK is running a photography competition on Facebook. Due the recent energy supply problems in Japan Panasonic had to delay the announcement of some of their upcoming products. The new Panasonic Micro Four Thirds camera and lenses will be announced in May (and not in April as I told you before). UPDATE : Other companies have been hit very hard by the earthquake desaster. According to Bloomberg “ Canon earnings this year will probably be 27 percent lower than previously estimated after last month’s earthquake and tsunami in Japan “. And Sony had to delete the lates product announcements! Than Panasonic should announce a new Micro Four Thirds camera, the G3. The Panasonic G10 has already been discontinued, the G2 price lowered to make room for the new G3. There will be also a new Panasonic 25mm f/1.4 lens. It is not Leica branded, has no image stabilization and unlike the famous Four Thirds brother it is not Leica branded. It should cost around $700. That’s more than just a rumor because Panasonic UK product manager John Mitchell confirmed that the 25mm lens is coming this summer: “ We are sure it’s going to be a great hit because it’s 50mm [35mm viewing angle] equivalent – really fast, really bright ” (Source: Amateur Photographer ). Oh forgot to mention: It has double the size of the current 20mm f/1.7 pancake . Is there room for some surprise? Let’s hope yes! Canon just announced that they will join the Micro Four Thirds coalition! Canon Uruguay just released an official press release: “ Canon confirms that mirrorless has no reason at all to exist. In our opinion it’s a waste of time to develop our own CSC-ILC-Mirrorless-EVIL system. But during a latino party we had yesterday our southamerican manager told us that every second camera sold in Japan, every fourth camera sold in Europe and every fifth camera sold in US are mirrorless. So we quickly decided to join the Micro Four Thirds coalition. We still had no time to send a text message to Panasonic and Olympus to share our decision. So please guys don’t tell them anything until we made them a call. ” In a second statement Canon Japan stated that the “ first camera to be announced will be the Canononet analogue camera which will have a MFT logo on it and a built-in MFT adapter. That was the fastest, easiest and cheapest way to release a camera “. P.S.: I don’t remember, what day is today? . . . → Read More: (FT6) Canon joins Micro Four Thirds coalition! ![]() The EOS 60D got a nice update this week that should help to address issues that people have been having with the camera. It also addresses a bit of a non-issue: the feature called “Art Features” in Japan is now called “Creative Features” so that EOS 60Ds across all regions use the same naming conventions. The update takes care of some more legitimate concerns too. Specifically, two issues where the camera would function abnormally after Live View shooting. If you set the camera to start movie shooting after using Live View, it could end up acting strange or not working. You can download the firmware directly from Canon . As always, you can find out more about the EOS 60D in our review . . . . → Read More: Canon Updates the EOS 60D ![]() The folks over at Canon are doing their best to get everything up and running again in terms of exporting their products to be purchased in the US, but there’s a bit of a snag. Due to the high levels of radiation in parts of Japan right now, US Customs is being very strict about what does and doesn’t make it in to the country. Customs and Border Protection is going to be monitoring radiation carefully with detection equipment in airports, sea ports, and anywhere cargo is coming into the country. Canon says they’ll be updating us as soon as they know more and will let us know what impact this will have on both the production and export of cameras. . . . → Read More: Canon Shipments to US May Be Held Up By Customs Fujifilm Japan has announced it has now resumed production of its X100 large-sensor compact. The company says that, after a brief interruption caused by the combined earthquake and tsunami that hit its Japanese plant, it has now resumed production and the camera should reach stores from the first week of April. . . . → Read More: Fujifilm resumes production for X100 large-sensor camera ![]() Demand for digital cameras is shifting from the developed markets of Western Europe, the USA and Japan to emerging economies such as Brazil, China, India and Russia, according to a report by Futuresource Consulting. Before the Earthquake-Tsunami-Nuclear disaster Panasonic had the plan to ship the G3 within May. But I guess there could be now a few weeks of delay. The 25mm f/1.4 should hit the market in summer (July). A next Panasonic camera and lens announcement is scheduled for late August. Olympus has the plan to release new PRO prime lenses in late May/early July. But there could be a delay with the worldwide lens shipment. We are also not 100% sure yet if they will announce a new PEN in late May/early July. We heard there will be a E-P2 replacement but we didn’t get exact info about the final release. A new product announcement from Olympus will be made in early September (We are almost certain they will announce the high-level PEN). . . . → Read More: A roadmap reminder (When to expect the next Olympus and Panasonic announcements) |
