A not so popular lens gets tested at SLRgear: The Olympus 40-150mm for m43 (+ Geometric distortion correction for Panasonic lenses)

There are some lenses that are tested and reviewed by many websites and there are lenses nobody ever talks about. That is the case of the Olympus 40-150mm f/4-5.6 ED M.Zuiko which has been recently tested by SLRgear (Click here) : “ The Olympus 40-150mm ƒ/4-5.6 M.Zuiko fared well in our tests, offering excellent performance up to 100mm, and above-average performance at 150mm. For the PEN system user looking for a portable telephoto option to supplement the 14-42mm kit lens, they should look no further. ” That is the very first test or article we found about that lens. Just a coincidence or nobody really cares about that lens? Who are the target buyers? The biggest plus point for that lens is the price in US. With $209 at Amazon (Click here) the lens is the cheapest Micro Four Thirds zoom. Sadly the price is almost double as high in Europe (244 Euro at Amazon.de ). Would love to know what you think about the 40-150mm M.Zuiko! P.S.: Check the price of the 40-150mm lens at Amazon , Adorama , B&H , J&R , eBay . M43photo.blogspot.com posted a very interesting article about the geometric distortion correction of current Panasonic lenses: “ Many Micro Four Thirds lenses feature in-camera geometric distortion correction. Two examples are the Panasonic pancakes, Lumix G 14mm f/2.5 and Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 . Both have pretty similar distortion corretion needs. When converting the sensor output to the out of camera JPEG image, around 10% of the pixels in the border area are lost. This is somewhat controversial. Some feel that a quality lens should not require further software correction. In fact, the lack of geometric distortion is a traditional sign of a high quality lens .” Read the article to see the comparison of the uncorrected and corrected images for some lenses!

Need for speed? Look what a f/0.75 lens can do on your Panasonic GF2 :)

There are not many videos out there which have been shot with a f/0.75 aperture lens(!) and a Micro Four Thirds camera. The maker of the video is seelling that Kowa 44mm f/0.75 on eBay : “ This is a very unique and beautiful lens that produces a soft blur due to its fast aperture.I tried it also with the HD video mode on my Panasonic GF2 and the result was stunning. This lens can be adapted to almost any camera as far as you buy the right adapter for it, I previously used it on my Canon 50D and on a Sony NEX 5 . I can say that due to the sensor size and distance from the back of the lens, you will get better results with the NEX but any mirrorless camera (EVIL camera) is good to use with that ultra fast lens .” Click here to see the Kowa 44mm f/0.75 auction on eBay . That lens is very cheap compared to the De Oude Delft 50mm f/.075 which usually sells for over $2000 on eBay . You can’t find anything faster than that (there was once a Zeiss f/0.7 but that’s impossible to find). P.S.: Panasonic GF2 is in Stock at Amazon , Adorama , B&H , J&R , eBay

Samyang announces the development of a new Fisheye lens for Micro Four Thirds (very compact!)

Samyang announced the development of a new Fisheye lens for m43 during the Focus on Imaging Show (via ePhotozine ): “ The Micro Four Thirds System has been developing extremely dynamically lately, which was proved by the growing interest in lenses constructed based on this system. To embrace true needs of photographers, Samyang Optics company, using a wealth of it’s experience in production of the high quality concept version of the fish-eye lens with 7.5mm focus is one of the most impressive outcomes of the works carried out. This ultra-wide-angle lens may become the most compact and optically perfect Micro Four Thirds System lens providing 180 degrees field of vision .” Hmmm, I am not a fisheye fan but at least we will have a much cheaper alternative of the currently (overpriced?) Panasonic 8mm f/3.5 Fisheye lens. Click here to check the price of that lens: Amazon , Adorama , B&H , J&R , eBay Message to Samyang. Make some decent compact and fast primes and I bet you will sell tons of them! P.S.: Samyang just released the 35mm f/1.4 for Four Thirds. New Olympus E-PL2 review (+ converter test at DC.watch)

There is a new Olympus E-PL2 review at CNET (Click here) : “ A great interchangeable-lens model if you’re looking for better photo quality and/or a more advanced feature set than your current point-and-shoot offers, the Olympus PEN E-PL2 still doesn’t satisfy for photographing active kids and pets .” Also Enticingthelight (Click here) tested the E-PL2: “ Olympus have built a beautiful-image maker with this E-PL2; if you like shooting JPEGs, you’ll love this camera. It is also a camera that is simple to operate, yet can be customised in hundreds of ways, thus appealing to both the newbie and the experienced shooter .” The Japanese website DC.watch.impress (Click here) tested the three new E-PL2 converters. There are many full size image samples you can analyze! Click those links to visit the E-PL2 product page: Amazon , Adorama , B&H , J&R , eBay . (FT5) “PEN pro” camera in 2-3 years (via Megapixel)

Image courtesy: Megapixel Olympus gave an Interview at Megapixel (Click here) . There is one big surprise statement: “ We see the mirrorless system as the future of digital photography. In 5-10 years reflex cameras will be a niche or will not be there at all. So we believe that PEN in the long run will also be in the professional market – but that will take maybe 2-3 years. In 2011 you will see more PEN products and more lenses (beyond what was discussed in the presentation). ” According to Olympus DSLR will become a niche market within 5-10 years. Interesting that Olympus says “PEN-type” cameras instead of “mirrorless” cameras There are a also a few more info about 3D (they don’t plan to support the Panasonic 12.5mm 3D lens ) and the new Olympus XZ-1 (it will not create a new line of cameras). Editor’s note: The “ good weapons ” Olympus is talking about are the new Olympus E-PL2 and accessories. So dear readers….what do you think about that news? Are you surprised? The good news is that Olympus plans to enter the PRO market. The issue here is to define what is a “PRO” camera. We have been told that an advanced Olympus m43 model will be announced within 2011. It will not replace the Olympus E-5 but as long as it has built-in EVF, a solid body, a new sensor and fast AF this will be PRO enough for me What is your opinion on that? What defines a PRO camera? What should Olympus do to satisfy your professional needs?

Panasonic GF2 review at Cameralabs (E-PL2 slightly better)

There is a new Panasonic GF2 review at Cameralabs (Click here) : “ Ultimately though the Lumix GF2 is a desirable and welcome new addition to Micro Four Thirds camp and one that will undoubtedly find favour with enthusiasts and ambitious novice photographers alike. It’s a lovely camera to use and one that’s also physically very desirable, but the issues discussed on this page – or perhaps more fairly, the benefits of its rivals – means it just falls short of our top rating in direct comparison. It still earns a hearty Recommended though. ” Where does it fall short? “ Overall we’d say the Olympus E-PL2 has a slight edge over the GF2. The GF2 crops look less contrasty and softer than those from the E-PL2 “. Interesting: “ With a larger sized sensor you might expect the Sony NEX-3 to produce superior result to the micro Four Thirds cameras, and it does, but the differences aren’t that marked at least at this lowest sensitivity ” Panasonic GF2 direct links to Amazon , Adorama , B&H , J&R , eBay . Surprise: Last minute design changes for the Samyang 35mm f/1.4 lens

Over a year passed without Olympus announcing any new Four Thirds lens. At least Samyang announced that nice 35mm f/1.4 manual focusing lens with 43-mount. There is a last minute surprise. Samyang added a red ring and an useful focusing scale to the lens. And they announced the final price which will be 389 Euro. All Samyang lenses for Olympus can be found on eBay only and under seven different brand names (Click on it to see all Four Thirds lenses from the specific brand!): Samyang Walimex Rokinon Opteka Falcon Vivitar Bower Unbelievable or not? Click the link to read the press release: “ Kraków, 4th of March 2011 r . – Delta company, the sole distributor of Samyang products for Europe proudly presents the final version of the long-waited for Samyang 35mm 1:1.4 AS UMC. Our new lens comes with utterly new design, with its distinguishing mark: a metallic red ring. A new concept version of Samyang 35mm 1:1.4 AS UMC was officially introduced during Photokina 2010 fairs held in Cologne. Since then, we have carried out intensive works to improve optical qualities of theproduct and devise its unique and exceptional design. The conducted works have allowed us to bring you the final version of the lens. Due to your recommendations we decided to add the focusing scale and diminish the overall dimension of the product. Samyang 35mm 1:1.4 AS UMC is an optically sophisticated 35mm f/1.4 wide-angle lens, which was designed for fullframe reflex camera. Nevertheless, it may be also used with APS-C/DX and Four Thirds cameras. The lens’s optical construction was based on two lenses made of the quality glass with high refraction factor, which made it possible to minimize its weight and dimensions. Moreover, we used an aspherical lens was to prevent the horizontal chromatic aberration. Owing to the high-quality, dense anti-reflexive layers, the lens produces stunningly high contrasts and perfectly reflects the natural colors. Samyang 35mm 1:1.4 AS UMC also takes advantage of the so called gliding lenses allowing to minimize the focusing distance. The lens will be available for sale with the following mounts: Canon, Four Thirds, Nikon, Pentax, Samsung NX and Sony Alfa. The recommended retail price for the microprocessor was established at EUR 379 gross. You will have a great opportunity to take a close look on the new Samyang 35mm 1:1.4 AS UMC on Sunday, during Focus on Imagining fairs in Birmingham in Great Britain. Please, don’t hesitate and visit Samyang stand located in the 10 hall, sector Q12. “

(FT3) A few new technologies Olympus is testing for the future PRO cameras.

Sometimes sources do send me info about camera prototypes and future technologies. As you can imagine it is very difficult to check if those info are correct or not. Last week a new Olympus patent ( Click here to read the article ) confirmed that one of our source were right when he told me that Olympus had a prototype camera with semi-transparent mirror. The same sources also gave us a list of other technologies Olympus is working on: – Sensor Shift with Rotation – Larger Multi-Format Sensor (think GH2 ) – New Battery Grip with Audio & Video I/O – Single Shot HDR Capability – Same Video Ability as GH1 The most amaizng feature is certainly the “ Single Shot HDR Capability “. We already saw a few Olympus patents about this. But as we all know, we are talking about technologies we might see in a few years only!

New Olympus E-PL2 and XZ-1 reviews!

DCresource (Click here) posted their Olympus XZ-1 review: “ The XZ-1 is Olympus’ best compact camera in many years. It offers a good design, super-fast lens, beautiful OLED display, manual controls, and plenty of point-and-shoot toys. It does have its share of annoyances — perhaps more so than its competition (at least those cameras that I’ve used) — though I have to cut Olympus some slack, as this is their first generation model. The XZ-1 is absolutely worth your consideration — just be sure to check out the other models in its class before you buy. ” Click those links to visit the XZ-1 priduct page: Amazon , Adorama , B&H , J&R , eBay . Trustedreviews (Click here) posted their Olympus E-PL2 review: “ Taking everything into account, we’d still be hard pressed to choose between this and the  GF2 , which only falls down in comparison because unlike the E-PL2 it doesn’t feature body integral anti shake, but is otherwise we feel more streamlined and slightly easier to use. The Olympus counters with its impressive and fun Art Filters, so ultimately a personal hands on is going to be the best way for you to make this particular purchase decision .” Click those links to visit the E-PL2 priduct page: Amazon , Adorama , B&H , J&R , eBay . (FT5) After the G3 there will be one more Panasonic m43 camera in August!

I am still waiting to get more news about the upcoming Panasonic G3 camera that should be announced in one month. But my sources already gave me some hints about the next Panasonic Micro Four Thirds camera that is going to be announced after the G3! We have no specs yet but the camera will be announced in late August. It will not be a GH camera and not be a new GS model (which we suppose to be the Micro Four Thirds version of the DMC-L1 ). This should be also the last Panasonic m43 camera that will be announced within 2011! P.S.: The G3 has a new sensor, new design and can take FullHD videos (but not at 24mbit/s like the new GH2 ). Link: DMC-L1 at Amazon and eBay Reminder: “FT5″ stays for 80-99% reliable info!

Take a look at the original Panasonic GF2 patent (+in Stock status)

Companies do not only patent specific technologies but also camera designs. Take a look at the following Panasonic patent that explains the Panasonic GF2 design (Source: freepatentsonline ). That’s the description: “ In one aspect, a mirrorless type imaging apparatus is provided. The imaging apparatus includes a mount to which a lens unit is mountable, an imager operable to produce an image signal from light incident through the lens unit, a light-emitter operable to emit light, and an electric storage device operable to supply electric power to the light-emitter, wherein the electric storage device is disposed behind the mount and below the imager. According to, in the imaging apparatus of the aspect, the electric storage device is disposed below the imager, so that imaging apparatus can be miniaturized . Additionally, the electric storage device is disposed below the imager, so that an influence of heat generation of the imager on the electric storage device can be reduced . ” You might want to read the rest of the patent to see what’s so special on the GF2 Reminder: The Panasonic GF2 is in Stock almost everywhere (as usual US is the latest country in the world to get stocks of Panasonic cameras!). Meanwhile Entincingthelight explains you why the X100 is NOT to expensive: “ I think I’ve shown that the X100 is not the expensive proposition many are making it out to be. For the photographer who wants a well-built, relatively compact, externally simple digital camera with physical dials, and for whom a fast wideangle lens covers most of his/her needs, the X100 is almost cheap , especially if you consider this photographer will probably use the camera for many years before replacing it. ” P.S.: In USA the camera will start shipping on March 7 (Source: Dpreview forum ). You can subscribe to be notified when the X100 will be in Stock at Amazon , Adorama , BHphoto , eBay . P.S.: Where in Europe???

New Panasonic GH2 reviews and DPreview studio shots (+Amazon says in Stock on March 8)

Reviews DPreview added the studio comparison samples which usually means that they will soon publish the final GH2 review. Have fun by comparing the GH2 results with other cameras. Dpreview also added GF1 downloadeable raw files for all ISOs, for comparison against the GF2. Digitalcamerareview tested the Panasonic GH2: “ The Panasonic GH2 surpasses the quality and performance of a point-and-shoot and just about every entry-level DSLR on the market. A high quality – though not perfect – kit lens, and an excellent 16 megapixel sensor and processing engine help the GH2 succeed. There’s a touchscreen for those who want it and a familiar array of controls for those who don’t. Right now, it’s safe to say that there’s nothing else like it. ” The final rating is 4.5/5 points. A short GH2 test at Outbackphoto . Black GH2 finally in US The GH2 is still out of Stock in all US online stores. In those months we only saw a few Silver GH2 in Stock here and there. Why Panasonic forces me to shoot my next documentary with a Canon instead of using the GH2.

For a long time we had to struggle to find the GH2 in Stock in US and Europe. But in these days I am experiencing another frustrating story with Panasonic. I have to shoot a new short documentary between March 3th and March 5th. That’s why I ordered some new GH2 batteries at a well known German online shop on January 20th (yes January!). It wasn’t in Stock at that time but the cruel news is that they still don’t have it in Stock after 6 weeks of waiting! And you know what? Not a single german online store do have it in Stock right now (Source: idealo ). I searched on eBay and found one eBay shop accepting preorders for five of them (Bayern Fotoversand) . Sadly they said that they don’t have them in Stock right now  and they have no idea when they will be in Stock again!!! What’s next? As I am shooting on the border between Italy and Austria I contacted both Panasonic Italy and Panasonic Germany: Panasonic Italy said that “ we didn’t notice that there is a supply problem ” and “ our PC systems says that delivery time is unknown “. Panasonic Germany gave us a phone number to an external distributor. We called the distributor that also wasn’t really sure about when it would be available (They said maybe 1-2 weeks). What am I going to do? Friends from the company helios.bz will give me the Canon 5DII with a huge pack of batteries. Resume: I don’t post this story to blame Panasonic, I posted it because I want them to acknowledge that they have some serious problems at the dsitribution level. The Panasonic GH2 has a much better video quality than the Canon 5DII but you really have to: a) Increase the production of the GH2 cameras and related accessories. b) If that is not possible at least inform us (and also inform Panasonic employers and online retailers) when those will be in Stock again. It’s pity I can’t use make a profesisonal use of the  Panasonic GH2 because of that. P.S: GH2 battery links to Amazon , Adorama , BHphoto , eBay (in Stock only in some US stores and not in european stores).

Olympus announces three new compact cameras with FullHD, Multiframe movie, Dual Engine TruePic III+ and Backlight-CMOS-Sensor

Olympus announced three new compact cameras: SZ-30 24x optical (25-600mm), 1080p movie, Can capture full res photos & video at the same time, Can shoot two videos at the same time SZ-20 12.5x optical, 1080p Movie, 460k screen, 9FPS Continual shooting TG-810 Crushproof, Waterproof, Shockproof, GPS & Electronic Compass, 920k dot screen Although those are not m43 camera it’s always interesting to see what kind of new features Olympus did or didn’t implement. The most interesting feature is the “ Multiframe movie ” which simultaneous captures 1080p HD videos and full resolution stills. The necessary power for that is given by the new “ Dual TruePic III+ Engine “. It’s also a surprise to see that Olympus is using a new 16 Megapixel “ Backlight-CMOS-Sensor “. Is it from Panasonic or Sony? UPDATE : If that 16Megapixel sensor is really from Sony than this could mean that Olympus is no more bound (by 2 or 4 years contracts) to Panasonic sensors. Could this have some influence on the next PEN cameras? Press release Megapixel DPreview Photographyblog Photoscala
