(FT5) Panasonic G3 and lenses announcements delayed (coming in May now)

Image on top: The Panasonic G2 which should be replaced by the new G3. I just received info from a few of my sources. Due the recent energy supply problems in Japan Panasonic had to delay the announcement of some of their upcoming products. The new Panasonic Micro Four Thirds camera and lenses will be announced in May (and not in April as I told you before). UPDATE : Other companies have been hit very hard by the earthquake desaster. According to Bloomberg “ Canon earnings this year will probably be 27 percent lower than previously estimated after last month’s earthquake and tsunami in Japan “. And Sony had to delete the lates product announcements! Than Panasonic should announce a new Micro Four Thirds camera, the G3. The Panasonic G10 has already been discontinued, the G2 price lowered to make room for the new G3. There will be also a new Panasonic 25mm f/1.4 lens. It is not Leica branded, has no image stabilization and unlike the famous Four Thirds brother it is not Leica branded. It should cost around $700. That’s more than just a rumor because Panasonic UK product manager John Mitchell confirmed that the 25mm lens is coming this summer: “ We are sure it’s going to be a great hit because it’s 50mm [35mm viewing angle] equivalent – really fast, really bright ” (Source: Amateur Photographer ). Oh forgot to mention: It has double the size of the current 20mm f/1.7 pancake . Is there room for some surprise? Let’s hope yes! The Panasonic G10 already disappeared from most stores (See Amazon , Adorama , B&H , J&R , eBay ) The current 25mm f/1.4 Four Thirds lens at Amazon , Adorama , B&H , J&R , eBay . Panasonic GF2 vs Canon 600D — And Panasonic GH2 vs hacked GH1

The video on top shows a funny and not so technical comparison between the Panasonic GF2 vs Canon 600D . M43photo.blogspot (Click here) posted a more detailed GH2 vs GH1 video quality comparison: “ One could be tempted to think that the GH1 gives better video quality, due to the twice as high video bitrate. But the GH2 has other advances…it is reasonable to guess that it samples more pixels as a basis for the video output…the GH2 gives somewhat better contrast and sharpness. The GH1 has slightly washed out colours and that the compression algorithm is better. My conclusion so far is that the GH2, even with lower bitrate, gives slightly better video quality .” GH2 direct links at Amazon , Adorama , B&H , J&R , eBay . New Olympus E-PL2, Fuji X100 and Voigtländer 25mm reviews

The Olympus E-PL2 has been tested by Electronista (Click here) : “ We suspect the intended audience will be very happy with the E-PL2. Apart from its jewel-like construction and finish, it’s an amazing piece of hardware for the price and size. The image quality is good for the class, and we saw some important steps forward in the control and visual output. Penpal is something of a novelty, especially at its $60 price, but it could be handy if you’re more interested in uploading to Facebook than an edit in Aperture or Lightroom ” Check the current E-PL2 price by clicking those direct links: Amazon , Adorama , B&H , J&R , eBay . The Fuji X100 has been reviewed by Trustedreviews (Click here) : “ The Fujifilm X100 certainly isn’t for everyone with its fixed lens, sizeable body and even more sizeable price tag. However, its rock-solid build quality, superb image quality – with exceptional low light performance – and more compact stance than an equivalent DSLR means it will have pride of place for many enthusiasts and pros as a back up to their main kit. However, if in the unlikely event that you’re considering this camera without already owning a DSLR, then we’d have to concede that any one of many low- to mid-range DSLRs, such as the Nikon D3100 or Canon EOS 550D, would be a more sensible bet. ” Check the current X100 availability at Amazon , Adorama , B&H , J&R , eBay . The korean website DC.Fever (Click here) posted a full Noktor 25mm review. Check the current Noktor auctions on eBay (Click here) .

(FT4) Short update: An Olympus lens wider than the Panasonic 14mm will definitely come in May/June! (+POLL)

A short lens rumor update. Another trusted source confirmed that Olympus is about to release a lens that is wider than the current Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 lens . I hope we can soon get some info about the real lens specs. Last week a new sources told us that Olympus should launch a 12mm lens which is faster than the Panasonic lens. A question. The picture on top shows one of the upcoming Olympus prime lenses (Could be the rumored 12mm or the 50mm or another lens). Olympus didn’t unveil any detail about the focal length and aperture. I am curious to know what you think about it: Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.

Luminous Landscape: Fuji X100 love and frustration (+ comparison with the Panasonic GF1)

Luminous Landscape (Click here) posted a Fuji X100 Field Test review. And the tester is quite frustrated: “ In reviewing what I’ve written above, you’ll have noted that I am overtly critical of some aspects of the X100′s user interface. Indeed it is because the camera is otherwise so good, and the image quality so exceptional, that its UI flaws are all the more glaring. But – let me be clear about this. My UI complaints are based on a personal bias in favour of cameras having smooth and seamless control interfaces. I hate anything that gets in the way of my being able to change a camera’s settings quickly and transparently when the situations demands. If I’m using a technical or view camera I have endless patience for slow setting controls. But not on a camera designed for street or documentary style shooting. Even one extra button press, or needing to scroll down a menu to find a needed setting can cause the shot to be lost, and that’s unacceptable. I suppose that it’s my background as a photojournalist that brings out this frustration .” Michael Carpentier (Click here) compared the Fuji X100 with the Panasonic GF1. The article is in french and the conclusion is “ the X100 may offer a better IQ than the GF1 in SOME cases, but the m4/3 gives it a serious run for it’s money and is faster and generally more usable. ” You can preorder the Fuji X100 at Amazon US , Adorama , BHphoto , Amazon UK . And if you want it NOW than the you have to place your bid on eBay (Click here) . Good luck! P.S.: To bad the GF1 is now discontinued. Only a few stores do have it in Stock now: Amazon , Adorama , B&H , J&R , eBay .

Big size samples of the new SLRmagic 11mm f/1.4 lens

Last week SLRmagic announced the new 11mm f/1.4 manual lens for Micro Four Thirds . The images you see on top are the very first full size samples posted by the company. CLick on the thumbnails to enlarge the image. The focal length and aperture are very appealing but the image quality is less impressive. You can get the lens on eBay (Click here) .

Olympus E-5 reviews (The E-5 beats the Panasonic GH2?)

Four-Thirds-User (Click here) made a very intriguing test. They compared the best Panasonic camera (the GH2 ) against the best Olympus camera (The E-5 ): “ In our tests the results clearly show that the E-5 and GH2 can significantly out-resolve Olympus’ E-3 and E-30 DSLRs. The E-5 also out-resolves the GH2 at low and high ISO settings, although the GH2 rallies in mid-range ISO sensitivities. ” UPDATE: Take the test with a grain of salt. As our readers have noticed the test method and results are at least “questionable”. See the comparison made by DxOmark (Click here) to see a more scientific test: Techradar (Click here) posted a new Olympus E-5 review: “ There’s plenty about the Olympus E-5 to keep the enthusiast photographer happy; however, it’s one of those cameras that has lots of ‘buts’ about it. For a start many photographers, apart from those already committed to the Four Thirds standard, are still like to be put off by the fact that it has a smaller than average sensor with no obvious weight, cost or size advantage. Although there’s no denying the high quality of the results the camera can produce at low sensitivity settings, a pixel count of 12 million is also decidedly last season and this may discourage some photographers more than it should. ” Olympus E-5 direct links at Amazon , Adorama , B&H , J&R , eBay .

US: Panasonic GH2 supply problems have ended (not a fool days news!).

Today Adorama has all three different kit in Stock: – Black Panasonic + GH2 14-140mm (Click here) – Black Panasonic + GH2 14-42mm (Click here) – Silver Panasonic + GH2 14-42mm (Click here) I guess we can now safely say that there are no more GH2 supply problems in US stores. US: Panasonic GH2 supply problems have ended (not a fool days news!).

A roundup of fool news :)

There is a long list of false news goign around the web today. be warned! Vitaly Kiselev wrote that on DVXuser.com : “ During some early stages of GH2 exploring we found the follow things: 1) Quite big part of firmware is deactivated as it contains most features present in AF100, including waveform. We are looking how to enable it. 2) 4:4:4 color mode on HDMI is present in special video output debug mode. So, it can be also enabled. 3) Sensor can run at variable frame rates from 12 up to 60fsp in 1080p and up to 120fps in 720p. 4) Bitrate can be adjusted up to 110Mbps with B frames and up to 150Mbps without them. ” The new Apple iCam and the end of analogue Photography at System Kamera Forum. (FT6) Canon joins Micro Four Thirds coalition!

Take that Nikon and Sony! Canon just announced that they will join the Micro Four Thirds coalition! Canon Uruguay just released an official press release: “ Canon confirms that mirrorless has no reason at all to exist. In our opinion it’s a waste of time to develop our own CSC-ILC-Mirrorless-EVIL system. But during a latino party we had yesterday our southamerican manager told us that every second camera sold in Japan, every fourth camera sold in Europe and every fifth camera sold in US are mirrorless. So we quickly decided to join the Micro Four Thirds coalition. We still had no time to send a text message to Panasonic and Olympus to share our decision. So please guys don’t tell them anything until we made them a call. ” In a second statement Canon Japan stated that the “ first camera to be announced will be the Canononet analogue camera which will have a MFT logo on it and a built-in MFT adapter. That was the fastest, easiest and cheapest way to release a camera “. P.S.: I don’t remember, what day is today?

(FT2) Olympus 50mm f/1.4 Micro Four Thirds lens to come by end of May?

The image on top shows the Olympus lens mockup We know from trusted sources that Olympus is going to announce new m43 lenses in May/June. Tonight a new anonymous source sent me a “rumor” claiming to know that Olympus will announce a 50mm f/1.4 and a fast 12mm wide angle Micro Four Thirds lens by end of May. I repeat, that info is from a new and anonymous source…take it with a grain of salt! If that rumor turns out to be true than both lenses will be faster than the Panasonic 45mm f/2.8 and the Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 lenses. I hope some of my trusted sources can confirm or deny the rumor during the next hours. Thanks! Reminder: Rumors classification explained (FT= FourThirds): FT1 =1-20% chance the rumor is correct FT2 =21-40% chance the rumor is correct FT3 =41-60% chance the rumor is correct FT4 =61-80% chance the rumor is correct FT5 =81-99% chance the rumor is correct

General Electrics will make “Micro Four Thirds alike” cameras…

A few readers sent me the link to CNET Asia . There is an article about General Electrics who said that “ GE is looking to introduce its first Micro Four Thirds-like camera before the end of 2011 “. This doesn’t mean they will join the m43 group. They will make a mirrorless camera and stop. By the end of the year 2011 almost every big company will have their own mirrorless camera and we will finally know if some of them will join m43. Those are the companies that still have to decide what to do: – Sigma – Fuji – Canon – Epson – Cosina/Voigtländer (already in with lenses, but no details about cameras yet) Interesting to know that Epson already made a digital mirrorless (or better “rangefinder”) camera, the Epson RD-1 and Cosina is well known for their analogue BESSA cameras. Both companies are using the Leica M-mount. Sigma and Fuji officially expressed their intention to make a mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses. But we have no details about their strategy. I do believe that Leica, Nikon and Pentax will make their own systems and not join m43. What about Canon? They said they don’t need to develop a mirrorless camera (and they don’t think the Fuji X100 will sell well-> Source Quesabesde ).

A Noktor 50mm f/0.95 o eBay

UPDATE : Sorry I had the wrong link. I corrected it. Last week where questioning what happened with the Noktor lens. You can’t get it on their website nor on any other store I know. And now I found one on eBay (Click here) . It’s the first Noktor auction since November! A wonder what the final winning bid will be… P.S.: I am a happy owner of the Noktor. Where I do use it most is for video productions. For stills the image quality at f/0.95 is insufficient but at least I can take pictures in very dark situations.

Press release: Zeiss CP.2 lens for Micro Four Thirds

We were all very excited when Zeiss announced that they will become part of the Micro Four Thirds group. But I do hope they will go much further with their “intentions” because those CP.2 lenses aren’t really what we amateurs are waiting for. These manual lenses ideal for professional filmmakers but also to expensive for us amateurs. One more thing, they are not designed from scratch for m43 cameras. They “only” made a new adapter to make it fit on professional cameras like the Panasonic AG-AF100 . Check the availability (and huge price) of those lenses at Amazon , Adorama , B&H , J&R , eBay . That’s the official press release (via Dpreview ) “ OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 30.03.2011 . : During the NAB Trade Show in Las Vegas from April 9-14, 2011, Carl Zeiss will present two new mounts for the Compact Prime CP.2 lenses: the E mount and the MFT mount. The MFT mount is particularly suitable for the new corresponding professional camcorders, while the brand-new E mount is perfect for the new Sony cameras like the Super 35 mm NXCAM camcorder. The MFT mount has been available since March. The new E mount is expected to be available beginning in June. Exactly a year ago, Carl Zeiss introduced the Compact Prime CP.2 series during the NAB Show in Las Vegas. They are the first lenses with interchangeable mount developed specially for filming with HDSLR cameras. Since then, there has been significant demand for these lenses among cinematographers and still photographers adding new video services. Carl Zeiss is now adding a new chapter to its Compact Prime CP.2 success story. “With these new mounts, we respond to many of our customers’ wishes asking to use the lenses on these new HD video cameras,” said Holger Sehr, Product Manager for Cinematography lenses at Carl Zeiss AG, Camera Lens Division. “Thanks to the interchangeable mounts, now for five different camera systems — PL, EF, MFT, F and E mount — our Compact Prime CP.2 lenses deliver superb flexibility, can be used in many different market segments, and are attractive for both end-customers and rental houses.” With the interchangeable mount and the 24

(FT4) Pentax will not join m43 (and leaks the ugliest mirrorless camera ever made)

On MirrorlessRumors.com you can see and read the specs of the new Pentax NC-1 system. The NC-1 features a 1:2.33 small sensor. If you wonder about the design of the camera it is based on the popular Pentax Auto 110 system (Click here to see camera and lenses on eBay) . Not a big deal in my opinion but I have been told that Pentax will also launch a second mirrorless system with APS-C sensor. If that rumor is true than we can exclude Pentax joining the Micro Four Thirds group. Bad news Who remains that could now join the m43 world as a camera maker? Come on Fuji! The X100 is selling like hotcakes and we want a m43 version of it! By the way, Fuji resumed the X100 production (preorders on Amazon , Adorama , B&H , J&R , eBay ) Reminder: Rumors classification explained (FT= FourThirds): FT1 =1-20% chance the rumor is correct FT2 =21-40% chance the rumor is correct FT3 =41-60% chance the rumor is correct FT4 =61-80% chance the rumor is correct FT5 =81-99% chance the rumor is correct

SLRmagic announces (an expensive) 11mm f/1.4 Micro Four Thirds lens.

SLRmagic announced a new 11mm f/1.4 wide angle lens with Micro Four Thirds mount. But there is a big disappointment. The price is incredibly high…$210!!! It would be a fair price if the lens would have at least a decent optical performance. But from the first images we have seen on eBay (Click here) we can see heavy vignetting and unsharp results. If you really need a fast wide angle lens get the Computar 12.5mm F1.3 which is much cheaper ( Read the review at EosHD ).
